Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after voting for House passage of Trade Promotion Authority language to strengthen Congress’ oversight of trade deals introduced by the President:

“Today’s House passage of Trade Promotion Authority is a huge win for America’s leadership in the global economy. Approving the TPA process ensures strong Congressional oversight of future trade agreements, transparency on behalf of the American people, and accountability as the Administration negotiates trade agreements. Washington state’s engagement in international trade creates opportunity at home: forty percent of jobs in our state are tied to trade. Through TPA, Congress will require the Administration to adhere to 150 pro-growth priorities for trade negotiations, including agriculture. TPA allows effective negotiations of trade agreements to level the playing field with foreign competitors and open markets that are critical for Central Washington farmers, ranchers, and producers of apples, wheat, hops, cherries, potatoes, and other products. Passing TPA sends a clear message to the world: America is committed to increasing fair trade, cooperation, and competition in the global market.”
