Newhouse Votes to Repeal Obamacare Provisions and Defund Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after supporting House passage of a Senate amendment to H.R. 3762, the Restoring American's Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. This legislation repeals major portions of Obamacare and prohibits federal funding for Planned Parenthood. This legislation uses the budget reconciliation process, which allows legislation to move through the Senate without the threat of a filibuster.
“Americans have rejected Obamacare, and today the House has acted with the Senate to dismantle the president’s failed law.” said Congressman Newhouse. “Under Obamacare, Washington families and businesses have faced higher taxes, insurance premiums, deductibles, as well as the loss of insurance plans and access to physicians they trust and want to continue to see. This legislation places the repeal of key Obamacare provisions on the president’s desk for the first time ever. The President must be held accountable for a government-knows-best approach to healthcare that has been roundly rejected by Central Washingtonians. The reconciliation legislative tool allows repeal of significant portions of Obamacare, including burdensome taxes, the individual and employer mandate penalties, health exchange subsidies, and Medicaid expansion provisions. This repeal would save taxpayers more than $500 billion over the next ten years and pave the way to replace Obamacare with a conservative, free-market alternative.
“Additionally, this legislation supports the lives of the most innocent: the unborn. No taxpayer should be forced to support the gruesome activity as shown in the undercover videos released earlier this year. Today’s bill protects the sanctity of human life by ending taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood while directing funds to community health centers that support women’s health. Taxpayers should not be forced to have their hard earned money support the nation’s largest abortion provider when there are many alternative community health clinics that support women’s health without offending the conscience of the American people. We cannot turn our backs on the unborn.
“I have fought to defend innocent life and dismantle Obamacare, piece-by-piece if necessary, and today’s vote is a historic step in advancing those efforts.”
