Newhouse Condemns Biden for Failure to Take Responsibility in Afghanistan

August 15, 2021

“President Biden must own up to his mistakes”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan was forced to evacuate after the Taliban began to advance on Kabul.

"Last month, President Biden reassured the American people that the Afghanistan government was "well-equipped" to defend themselves against the Taliban, and the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan would be fine. Just a few days ago, President Biden emphasized that we wouldn't see helicopters evacuating the embassy. And yet, over the past three days, we have seen terrorists released from prison, the Taliban take over Bagram airbase, and our embassy personnel left in the crosshairs of this conflict.

Not only is this a complete and utter failure of President Biden's foreign policy, but it has severe ramifications at home where we are dealing with an ever-escalating border crisis, and for the women and schoolgirls who have only just begun to recover from the effects of the Taliban's repressive regime.

President Biden is either guilty of intentionally misleading the American public and the military he presides over or was widely misled by his own political appointees.

President Biden needs to take action now to rectify this situation rather than suggesting we "negotiate" with terrorists. American lives and our allies are at risk; President Biden must own up to his mistakes, protect our men and women on the ground, assist our Afghan allies, and prevent the resurgence of Al Qaeda before it's too late."
