Newhouse Demands Solutions for Struggling Central Washington VA Clinics

July 27, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) questioned officials from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Technology Modernization hearing, Protecting our Veterans: Patient Safety and Electronic Health Record Modernization Program. Recent reports from the Inspector General cite specific issues related to the rollout of the new Electronic Health Record system in Walla Walla and Spokane and show that it caused almost 150 cases of harm to veterans in Central Washington.

“Dozens of healthcare employees at the clinics in Central Washington have told me that the Cerner training is completely ineffective,” said Rep. Newhouse. “Now, we have evidence that there have been many cases of harm done to our veterans. Our veterans' care cannot be compromised, so, at what point will the VA be ready to scrap the program?”
