Newhouse Slams Reintroduction of the Green New Deal

April 20, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) reintroduced the Green New Deal, a radical climate change proposal:

"The Green New Deal is a radical wish list that will decimate our economy, destroy good-paying American jobs, and exacerbate the damage already done to our energy sector by the Biden Administration," said Rep. Newhouse.

He continued, "We have bipartisan, responsible solutions to protect our environment and conserve our resources, but radical Democrats continue to choose the partisan route that will expand the reach of the government, burden families and businesses that are working to recover from a global pandemic, threaten American energy security, and give even more power to hostile regimes like China and Russia. The Green New Deal was unacceptable before, and it is unacceptable now."

Background:

Rep. Newhouse has strongly supported responsible efforts to promote conservation, clean energy infrastructure, and research to strengthen our electric grid and energy storage capabilities.

Just this week, he introduced the Conservation and Innovative Climate Partnership Act, which allocates funding for land-grant institutions, like Washington State University, to partner with local farmers to boost existing conservation and climate practices.

Rep. Newhouse also introduced the Pacific Northwest Pumped Storage Hydropower Development Act to improve permitting for pumped storage hydroelectric projects, create jobs in Central Washington, and protect tribal interests. The bill aims to increase renewable energy production and storage in the Pacific Northwest while paving the way for a pumped storage project in the 4th Congressional District.
