Newhouse Statement on Government Reopening
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement on President Trump's announced an agreement to temporarily reopen the federal government until February 15, 2019. The House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution by unanimous consent and will resume negotiations to fully fund the government and provide border security.
"Democrats have finally agreed to come together with Republicans to negotiate on a Homeland Security package that will include funding for a physical barrier on the southern border," said Rep. Newhouse. "Speaker Pelosi previously said she was willing to give only one dollar to President Trump's border security proposal, and since January 9th, she has refused to meet with the President on the path forward. I am glad all sides have agreed to negotiations. Reopening the government to allow for hard-working federal employees to be paid while these negotiations happen is the right thing to do. President Trump has remained strong on his goal to secure our border and increase safety for Americans. I think these negotiations are a great opportunity to discuss broader immigration reforms, like solutions to improve agriculture labor, give certainty to DACA recipients, and other priorities for the people of Central Washington. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to find a solution that funds the government and fixes border security."
