House Committee Unanimously Passes Newhouse Resolution Supporting Voluntary, Locally-Led Conservation

February 17, 2022

Legislation commemorates the 75th anniversary of the National Association of Conservation Districts

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04), Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, released the following statement after the House Committee on Natural Resources unanimously passed H.Res. 641, a bicameral and bipartisan resolution to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) and honor the locally-led, collaborative conservation efforts they deploy throughout the United States.

“NACD was founded on the philosophy that conservation decisions should be made at the local level, by the men and women who live, work, and farm on our land—not government bureaucrats in D.C. who’ve never even heard of the Yakima Valley,” said Rep. Newhouse. “This bipartisan resolution recognizes NACD’s 75 years of promoting responsible land management and continued commitment to supporting the efforts of local districts and conservationists throughout our country. I am glad to see this resolution approved by the Natural Resources Committee, and I’ll work to ensure it’s considered on the House floor as soon as possible.”

The bipartisan resolution was introduced in September 2021 with the support of 30 House Members. NACD President Michael Crowder of West Richland also submitted this letter of support for the effort.

Background:

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that represents America’s 3,000 conservation districts and the 17,000 men and women who serve on their governing boards. Conservation districts are local units of government established under state law to carry out natural resource management programs at the local level. Districts work with millions of cooperating landowners and operators to help them manage and protect land and water resources on private and public lands in the United States.

NACD’s mission is to promote responsible management and conservation of natural resources on all lands by representing locally-led conservation districts and their associations through grassroots advocacy, education and partnerships.

In October 2021, NACD President Michael Crowder joined Rep. Newhouse on an episode of the Congressional Western Caucus podcast, A Voice for Rural America, to discuss how the organization has worked to promote and increase conservation efforts in rural communities like those in Central Washington.
