Newhouse Announces $5M Grant to Enhance Central Washington Healthcare

November 29, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded $5,030,719 to the Columbia Basin Health Association (CBHA) through its Health Center Cluster program. This grant was funded from FY21 appropriations, which Republicans approved in December of 2020.

"Organizations like the Columbia Basin Health Association are critical to ensuring our rural communities receive the same standard of healthcare as our urban counterparts," said Rep. Newhouse. "I am pleased HHS has awarded this much-needed funding to the CBHA, and I look forward to continuing to partner with these organizations to deliver the affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare the people of Central Washington deserve."

Background:

Through the Health Resources & Services Administration, HHS awards grants to organizations that meet standards of federally qualified health centers. HRSA defines Health Centers as organizations that:

  • Deliver comprehensive, culturally competent, high quality primary health care, as well as supportive services such as health education, translation, and transportation.
  • Provide services regardless of patients' ability to pay and charge for services on a sliding fee scale.
  • Develop systems of patient-centered and integrated care that respond to the unique needs of diverse medically underserved areas and populations.
  • Private non-profit or public entities, including tribal and faith-based organizations, that operate under the direction of a patient-majority governing board.
