Newhouse Announces Launch of 2021 Central Washington Congressional App Challenge

June 24, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) announced the launch of the annual Central Washington Congressional App Challenge (CAC), open to all middle and high school students who reside or go to school in Washington's 4th Congressional District. Students may participate as individuals or in teams of up to four.

"The Congressional App Challenge is an excellent opportunity for the students of our district to demonstrate their talent and creativity," said Rep. Newhouse. "I strongly encourage all students who are interested in or passionate about the STEM field to create and submit an app."

The CAC will begin today, June 24, 2021, and will run through November 1, 2021. Applicants can submit their app at any time throughout this period. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and given congressional recognition for their outstanding achievements in STEM and Computer Science. Their apps will be featured in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C, on house.gov, and on the Congressional App Challenge website. Additional prizes will be announced.

Background:

The Congressional App Challenge (CAC) was established in 2013 and officially launched by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2015 because Congress recognized that STEM and computer-based skills are essential for economic growth and innovation, and that the U.S. has been falling behind on these fronts. To maintain American competitiveness, it is crucial that the U.S. invests in our youth now and helps them acquire these valuable skills. The CAC encourages students to pursue those skills and recognizes them for their efforts.

Last year's winners, Brianna Simpson of Richland High School, Conner Anderson of Chiawana High School, Taran Zorn of Kamiakin High School, and Erika Gaskins of Southridge High School worked as a team to design the winning app, "Llama Trauma." The app was designed to draw attention to the growing problem of food insecurity in the United States and encourage Americans to donate to their local food banks.
