Newhouse Announces USDA Rural Electric Loans for Central Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Perdue announced federal investment by USDA Rural Development to improve rural electric infrastructure in Central Washington:
"Rural communities consistently see a need for improved and modernized electric infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, and a strengthened energy grid," said Rep. Newhouse. "This need has become increasingly clear as our nation responds to a pandemic like COVID-19. I applaud Secretary Perdue for following through on his commitment to rural communities by increasing federal investment in electric infrastructure in Central Washington and across the country."
USDA is providing loans and loan guarantees to rural electric cooperatives and utilities through the Electric Loan Program. Three entities in Central Washington have received loans from the program:
Yakama Power - $1,000,000
Yakama Power's service area lies within the Yakama Reservation, which occupies portions of Yakima, Klickitat, and Lewis counties in south-central Washington.
Nespelem Valley Electric Cooperative - $200,000
Nespelem Valley serves approximately 1,500 consumers over more than 400 miles of line in Douglas, Okanogan, and Ferry counties in northern central Washington.
Benton Rural Electric Association - $4,978,000
Benton serves more than 14,000 consumers across 1,700 miles of energized line in Benton, Lewis, and Yakima counties in south central Washington.
The recipients will use the funds to build and improve electric transmission and distribution lines, as well as mitigate the negative economic impacts of COVID-19. The total investment by USDA is equal to $1.6 billion awarded to entities in 21 states.
"Reliable and modern 21st century infrastructure, including electric infrastructure and smart grid technologies, is a cornerstone for prosperity in rural America," Secretary Perdue said. "Under the leadership of President Trump, USDA is committed to being a strong partner to rural communities in building their futures."
