Newhouse Announces Winners of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition
Winner: A Year Overdue, Alexander Marquez, 11th grade, Hanford High School
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) announced the winners of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition for high school students in the Fourth District:
"I want to extend my congratulations to Alexander on his winning entry, and my sincere thanks goes out to all of the Central Washington students who submitted artwork for consideration in this year's Congressional Art Competition," said Rep. Newhouse. "I always enjoy seeing the creativity of our student artists, and I look forward to seeing these pieces displayed in the U.S. Capitol and in my offices, where people from around the country will be able to see the exceptional talent exhibited by Central Washington's young artists."
The winning entry, A Year Overdue by Alexander Marquez of Hanford High School, is an emotive self-portrait of a student peering into his school, emptied in the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns. This piece will be hung in the U.S. Capitol alongside winning entries from congressional districts across the country for one year. The winner will visit Washington, D.C. to attend a reception sponsored by the Congressional Institute, which hosts the annual competition.
Rep. Newhouse has invited the second, third, and fourth place winners, Yarixa Perez (Zendaya), Aurora Nava (The Beauty Within), and Alondra Rodriguez (Deep Reflections), all of A.C. Davis High School, to hang their art in the Washington, D.C. Office and the Tri-Cities and Yakima District Offices, respectively.
