Newhouse Congratulates Fourth District Appointees to Military Academies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) today announced five students from the Fourth Congressional District who received appointments U.S. Service Academies. The students received nominations from Rep. Newhouse last year and have been selected to attend the nation’s most prestigious military academies, including the Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy, and the Naval Academy. Rep. Newhouse released the following statement:

“I congratulate all of these students from Central Washington who have received appointments to Service Academies and have taken up the call to serve in our nation’s Armed Forces,” said Rep. Newhouse. “They each stand out for their academic and athletic excellence, their leadership potential, and their dedication to wear the uniform of the United States military. I was honored to nominate these future leaders, and I am proud that these young people will represent the very best of Central Washington in our nation’s Service Academies.”

The following students nominated by Rep. Newhouse received appointments to attend Service Academies:


U.S. Military Academy at West Point

High School: Southridge High School


U.S. Air Force Academy

Name: Joseph “Dane” Gurnard, son of Joseph and Tami Gurnard

Hometown: East Wenatchee

High School: Eastmont High School


Name: Austin Jacob Dreyer, son of Christopher and Pam Dreyer

Hometown: West Richland

High School: Hanford High School


U.S. Naval Academy

Name: Seth Riley King, son of Dale and Mary King

Hometown: Pasco

High School: Hanford High School


Name: Robert Julian Leam, son of Julian and Elaine Leam

Hometown: Richland

High School: Richland High School (Graduated in 2012)
