Newhouse Denounces Socialism, Stands with Cuban People

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after joining Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) in introducing a resolution standing with the Cuban people and their struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights. The people of Cuba have recently taken to the streets in the biggest protest for freedom Cuba has seen in 60 years with no access to food, healthcare, or internet as a direct result of failed socialist policies and communist rule.

"Socialism and communism never work, and it is imperative that we reject these systems in the harshest terms," said Rep. Newhouse. "The Cuban protests remind us of the liberties we hsitesave and hold so dear: liberties our forefathers gave their lives to attain and our men and women in uniform protect every day. We cannot take these freedoms for granted. I stand with the Cuban people as they fight for their own freedom against the oppressive Communist dictatorship they live under."

Background:

• Rep. Malliotakis is the daughter of a Cuban refugee who fled Cuba when Castro came to power. Her resolution calls for the U.S. House of Representatives to stand in solidarity with the people of Cuba and their fight to achieve freedom, democracy, and human rights.
