Newhouse Meets with President Trump on Trade, Applauds Trade Agreement Announcement with European Union

July 25, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) today released the following statement after meeting with President Trump and other members of Congress at the White House on agriculture and trade. Just before the meeting, President Trump announced an agreement(link is external) with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to ease tensions to avoid a trade war:

"President Trump's announcement today in the Rose Garden with the European Commission President on lowering trade tensions with one of our most important trading partners is a welcome development," said Rep. Newhouse. "This President is working to level the playing field as no one has done before to address unfair trading practices. In our meeting, I brought up the challenges of Central Washington cherry-growers who are facing retaliatory tariffs as one example of export-reliant American industries that have been paying the price for rising tension. The European Union's agreement to increase imports of American products, as well as working toward the goal of zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies is a very positive step. Today's announcement of reexamining plans for additional tariffs and putting existing tariffs on hold while trade talks continue with the EU will go a long way to rebuilding confidence with our trading partners. America can be strong on trade by defending our interests while maintaining our export markets. I stand ready to work with the President to strengthen relationships with our other trading partners as expeditiously as possible."
