WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement on the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) proposed rulemaking which could help farmers advertise job openings to domestic workers as required under the H-2A visa program. The DOL rulemaking would require that employers seeking to hire temporary workers post the employment opportunities online, which is in line with today’s modern recruitment practices for employers and job seekers as well as reducing employers’ recruitment costs.

“The Trump Administration has remained committed to modernizing the H-2A program to make it more workable for farmers,” said Rep. Newhouse. “This change was long overdue, and I applaud this positive step to streamline regulations and modernize the H-2A program to ease burdens on small farm operations struggling with scarce labor.”

The proposed rulemaking is an early step in H-2A regulatory reforms as promised in May in a joint statement of the Secretaries of Agriculture, Labor, State, and Homeland Security.
