Newhouse Stands Against Socialist Spending Spree
“We don’t need bigger government, we need better leadership.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement on this morning's vote against H.R. 5376, the Build Back Better Act.
"Today's vote leaves me concerned for the future of our country, and I am deeply disappointed in my Democratic colleagues for pushing through this partisan package.
"The American people are already struggling to make ends meet thanks to the skyrocketing inflation that has negatively impacted wage growth, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and increasing gas prices we've been experiencing under the Biden Administration. Not only will this package raise taxes on Washington families, but it goes even further by borrowing against our children's future, raising our national debt by $367 billion dollars.
"Our national debt has already surpassed $28 trillion – to put that number in perspective, that's roughly 230 thousand dollars per taxpayer. Speaker Pelosi and other Democratic leaders might have 230 thousand dollars just lying around, but most people—the vast majority of the people I represent—don't.
"Now, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat leaders are throwing more of your money down the drain as they seek to achieve their socialist dream of expanded government by adding more IRS agents, taxing our small businesses, preventing domestic energy production, creating Green New Deal programs, and eliminating work requirements for welfare benefits.
"It is abundantly clear that this legislation will be devastating for the men and women I represent in Central Washington who produce so much of the food and fiber that feeds our nation, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to prevent this piece of legislation from going any further.
"We owe our children, grandchildren, and future generations a return to fiscal responsibility. That starts with legislating responsibly and thoughtfully, not just catering to the radicals in the Democratic Party. It's time that they learn: We don't need bigger government, we need better leadership."
