WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) today released the following statement on his vote to override President Obama’s veto of H.R. 3762, the Restoring American's Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act to repeal major portions of the President’s health law and to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood:

“I was proud to support putting a bill—for the first time ever—on the President’s desk that repeals Obamacare and defunds Planned Parenthood,” said Rep. Newhouse. “The President’s veto ignored the will of the American people who want his health care law repealed. Today’s vote to override that veto shows that with a new Republican president, majorities in both houses of Congress will be able to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act and suspend taxpayer support for the nation’s largest abortion provider. I will support continuing constitutional efforts to defend the lives of unborn children and restore a patient-centered health care system.”

H.R. 3762 was passed in January by a vote of 240-181 in the House and 52-47 in the Senate. President Obama vetoed the legislation on January 8, 2016. In order to override a veto, a two-thirds majority of the House must vote against the veto, and the Senate requires a majority of 67.
