Spending and Economy
Under one-party rule in Washington, D.C., the federal government spent tens of trillions of dollars on initiatives that both drive inflation up and punish small businesses through tax and interest rate hikes. In the meantime, unemployment payouts keep workers at home and out of the labor pipeline needed in our economy. Our tax code remains extensive and complex while continuously demanding more from hardworking Americans to feed outlandish spending habits.
This is unacceptable, which is why as a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee responsible for all federal spending, I am fighting for a common-sense conservative approach to spending taxpayer dollars that works for Americans and small businesses and protects against disguised tax hikes like the Inflation Reduction Act.

Today Rep. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) released the following statement after voting in support of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 that includes funding directed to Central Washington, protects American farmland, and cuts wasteful, reckless federal spending.
Last week, the national debt reached $34 trillion for the first time in history. In the last three years the federal government has spent trillions of dollars outside of regular budgeted spending. Prices are up, interest is high, and there is no excuse not to reverse the harmful policies that have brought us to this point. One of my New Year’s resolutions this year is putting a stop to the out-of-control D.C.
America’s small businesses took a beating during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many in Central Washington were lost to the economic disaster that followed. Upon the economy’s reopening, small businesses were optimistic about a fruitful recovery, but instead were met with the highest inflation seen in this country in over forty years due to the Biden Administration’s economic policies.
