Newhouse Announces Winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) announced the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for high school students in the Fourth District:
“I want to extend my congratulations to Morgan on her beautiful and deeply moving painting, which highlights the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW) in Central Washington and across the country. Her piece not only displays technical mastery but emotional expertise as it urges its audience to action on the MMIW crisis,” said Rep. Newhouse. “My sincere thank also goes out to all of the Central Washington students who submitted artwork for consideration in this year’s Congressional Art Competition. I always enjoy seeing the creativity of our student artists, and I look forward to seeing these pieces displayed in the U.S. Capitol and in my offices, where people from around the country will be able to see the exceptional talent exhibited by Central Washington’s young artists.”
The winning entry, Silenced by Morgan Greene of A.C. Davis High School, is a painting of a Native American Woman with a red handprint—the symbol of missing and murdered indigenous women—over her mouth. Native Americans make up about 2% of Washington State’s population, but Native Women account for 7% of the state’s reported missing women.
This piece will be hung in the U.S. Capitol alongside winning entries from congressional districts across the country for one year. The winner will be invited to visit Washington, D.C. to attend a reception sponsored by the Congressional Institute, which hosts the annual competition.
Rep. Newhouse has invited the second, third, and fourth place winners, Mia Dufault (Little Princess), Isabelle Ehlis (Weathered Wisdom), and Marlene Martinez (Dreamer), all of A.C. Davis High School, to hang their art in the Washington, D.C. Office and the Tri-Cities and Yakima District Offices, respectively.
