WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after voting no on H.R. 4760, the Securing America's Future Act.

“Our immigration system is broken, and we need reforms to secure our border, keep families together, and fix DACA,” said Rep. Newhouse. “I support strengthening border security, providing a long-term solution for DACA, closing immigration enforcement loopholes, and ending the visa lottery program – all of which are the President’s requirements to sign immigration reform legislation into law. H.R. 4760 did not fully address these priorities. However, in the coming days, the House will be considering legislation I cosponsored, H.R. 6136, the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act, which does include these provisions and is the best opportunity we have to achieve real immigration reform. While H.R. 4760 did contain agricultural labor provisions I support, other provisions of the legislation would have made the ag-labor crisis facing farmers even worse. I commend the Speaker and the Majority Leader for committing to me personally to bring forward language that addresses agriculture’s labor needs, and I am pleased that language will now be included in H.R. 6136. Agriculture is a labor-intensive industry, and there remains a severe shortage of workers. Our farmers and ranchers must have access to a legal and reliable workforce in order to provide the world with a safe and abundant supply of food.”

The House began consideration of H.R. 6136 today, and Rep. Newhouse participated in debate on the floor. Rep. Newhouse’s remarks were delivered before the agreement to include reforms for agriculture in H.R. 6136.
