Newhouse, Stauber Meet with Local Law Enforcement to Discuss JUSTICE Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. Dan Newhouse (WA-04) and Pete Stauber (MN-08) met with local police chiefs and sheriffs from Yakima, Richland, West Richland, Walla Walla, Moses Lake, Pasco, and Kennewick to discuss ongoing public safety priorities, as well as recent federal legislation to reform and improve policing across the United States, such as Rep. Stauber's JUSTICE Act.
"Public safety is job number one for our police and the communities they serve," said Rep. Newhouse. "I'm proud to welcome my friend, Pete Stauber, to our district where he can hear firsthand how our local law enforcement agencies are working to improve public safety efforts and relationships with local communities. Having important discussions like the ones we had today allows us to open a line of thoughtful, respectful dialogue as Congress considers legislation that will affect the way our officers work to enforce the rule of law."
"As a former law enforcement officer turned legislator, I am always eager to meet with my brothers and sisters in blue and learn more about how we can better support them at the federal level," said Rep. Stauber. "I am grateful to my friend Rep. Newhouse for inviting me to hear from the law enforcement community within his district and I will keep their viewpoints in mind as we work on solutions to keep our communities safe."

Rep. Stauber, a former police officer of over 20 years, has firsthand experience in working with both government officials and local law enforcement agencies to improve policing practices and create safer communities. During his tenure as a police officer in Duluth, Rep. Stauber was the victim of two violent gun crimes. His experience has soldified his belief that more must be done to support law enforcement officers, and he is an active participant in the bipartisan discussions regarding police reform in Congress.
