As summer comes to a close and the school year starts up again, young men and women who are nearing graduation or have already graduated from high school are faced with key questions regarding their future. Many students are deciding whether to pursue higher education or begin a career right away. Young people (and their parents) are asking: what path will they take? Few choices in life will have a greater impact than this decision at that early age.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) spoke on the House floor to recognize the sacrifices and efforts of first responders, firefighters, and volunteers who continue to battle wildfires across Washington State. The Okanogan Complex fire has now surpassed last year's Carlton Complex fire as the largest wildfire in Washington State's recorded history.
August is when Congress adjourns during the hottest part of the summer, and it was a busy time for me traveling Central Washington, meeting with constituents and participating in local business and community visits.
These are difficult times for many Washingtonians as the battle against wild fires continues on multiple fronts. The spirit of sacrifice and generosity of fellow citizens, near and far, gives a reason for hope amid great adversity.
While towns in Okanogan have been especially hard-hit, Chelan, Yakima, Klickitat, Ferry, and Stevens counties face devastating blazes. I saw the destruction of homes and businesses in Chelan and Twisp: the scale of the challenge seems daunting, but these fires have met the grit and resolve of courageous men and women.
Many local families, farmers, and businesses in Central Washington are still dealing with the ripple effects and devastating economic impact caused by the months-long slowdown at 29 West Coast ports during contract negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA). Congress must now take action to approve legislative reforms to address future slowdowns to reduce the crippling threat they pose to our economy.
SUNNYSIDE – Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) sent a letter to President Obama supporting Governor Inslee's request for a federal Emergency Declaration to secure additional resources to help cover the cost of wildfires burning in the state.
SUNNYSIDE – Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after learning of the tragic loss of three firefighters while battling a wildfire near Twisp:
Our Founding Fathers possessed the wisdom and foresight to create a constitutional republic that limited the power of the federal government through the principle of the separation of powers and by holding lawmakers accountable to the consent of the governed. They would likely be shocked and alarmed by the massive burden of regulations imposed by today’s unelected federal bureaucracies.
