YAKIMA – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) today announced the winners of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for high school student in the Fourth District.
"I am proud of all the student artists who submitted entries and participated in this year's competition," said Rep. Newhouse. "The talent of the artists made it a difficult and very close choice. I look forward to seeing the artwork created by Washington's young people displayed in the U.S. Capitol for all visitors to enjoy, as well as in the Fourth District congressional offices in D.C., Yakima, and Tri-Cities."
I recently visited Northwest Harvest in Yakima to get a firsthand look at the important work the food distribution center and the food bank network are doing to support the vulnerable in our community and to hear about challenges that food banks may be facing. Federal policy can hinder or help distribution of emergency food aid through our nation's food banks. Federal regulations should ensure that non-profits are able to operate in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2016 Energy and Water Appropriations bill by a vote of 240 to 170. The Senate must now write and pass an appropriations bill.
The critical water shortage facing many drought-stricken western states is a cautionary tale: when nature intervenes, it tests whether water management planning is meeting demand and providing stable, adequate supply. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor for March 31, 2015, all or significant portions of 11 western states, including the state of Washington, are suffering from severe to exceptional drought. Faced with extreme drought conditions, California has resorted to fines for excessive water usage – however, conservation by rationing shrinking water supplies will only go so far.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced H.R. 2097, the Bureau of Reclamation Surface Water Storage Streamlining Act of 2015 to streamline the Bureau of Reclamation's environmental planning and study process for new surface water storage projects. The bill would apply the same streamlined water project development process used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the Water Resources Reform Development Act of 2014 to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in order to facilitate the construction of new dams and reservoirs.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) led 36 Members in a letter to U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Dan Ashe urging the Administration to move forward with the implementation of its proposed rule, published on June 13, 2013, to delist the gray wolf (Canis lupus) nationally from the "List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife" under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Businesses, farmers and agricultural producers in Washington state are renown for producing high-quality manufactured goods, services, and agricultural products. Washington increasingly plays the role of ‘international supermarket' for customers in fast-growing nations on the Pacific Rim, creating jobs and economic growth here at home.
Americans prosper and create prosperity for others when they are able to keep and spend more of what they earn. April is Tax Month, and it can be a reminder that nothing in life is ‘as certain as death and taxes,' to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin. The federal tax code should be consistent, encourage economic growth, and allow Americans to plan with certainty. That is why I supported legislation passed in the House this month to reduce the tax burden on families, farms, and businesses by repealing the federal estate tax (or "death tax") and to make the sales-tax deduction permanent.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced H.R. 1985, the Pacific Northwest Gray Wolf Management Act of 2015 to remove the gray wolf from the "List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife" under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and return management authority for the species back to the individual Pacific Northwest states. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) and Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) joined Rep. Newhouse to introduce this legislation as original co-sponsors:
