WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Newhouse (R-WA) joined Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI), Brian Mast (R-FL), and Elise Stefanik (R-NY) to introduce a bipartisan resolution commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced H.R. 4867, the General James N. Mattis Congressional Gold Medal Act. The bill would bestow the Congressional Gold Medal to General James N. Mattis, "in recognition of his distinguished military career, his steadfast moral character and patriotism, and his unyielding devotion to the protection of this Nation." The legislation was introduced with the full bipartisan support of the Washington delegation.
One of Congress' most important Constitutional responsibilities is providing for our military and national defense. For the past 58 years, this has been a bipartisan affair. Members of the House and Senate from both sides of the aisle have come together to pass a bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that provides for our military and our troops who fight to protect and defend us.
This past week, we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy, otherwise known as D-Day. Many of us know D-Day as an event that eventually resulted in victory for the Allied forces in World War II. Thousands of brave American soldiers sacrificed their lives for the greater good and helped to secure the freedom we enjoy today.
On Memorial Day, we honor our nation's servicemembers who have given the ultimate sacrifice. We surround their families and loved ones with prayers and support. We lay flowers on memorials, make visits to monuments, and we pay tribute to their service by lowering our flags to half-mast. While it may be easy to associate Memorial Day weekend with barbeques, a day off from work or school, and the start of summer, we cannot forget that there is a reason we observe this day – and each of them have a story.
WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced legislation, H.R. 5504, with the support of the entire Washington delegation in the U.S. House, to designate the U.S. Postal Service facility at 4801 West Van Giesen Street in West Richland, Washington, as the "Sergeant Dietrich Schmieman Post Office." Sergeant Dietrich Schmieman of Richland was serving in the U.S.
