Agriculture
As a third-generation farmer, I understand how important agriculture is for families, jobs, and trade in Central Washington. Our district’s farmers and producers grow the highest quality hay, wheat and more than 300 specialty crops such as potatoes, cherries, hops, apples, mint, and wine grapes. Blessed with the conditions to produce such a diverse range of crops, Washington shares its natural abundance with the world, playing the role of “international supermarket.”
As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture I am fighting to protect that reputation by bringing the voices of Central Washington farmers to Congress. I am proud to have sponsored legislation that puts farmers first, boosts our local economies, and ensures a stable, reliable, and legal agriculture workforce.
I am a staunch advocate for a strong Farm Bill that promotes American farmers and ensures the long-term success of America’s agriculture industry and am against draconian measures and initiatives like the death tax and WOTUS regulations that puts the future of family farms at risk.

Millions of Americans tuned in last Wednesday night to see what President Biden had to say about the first 100 days of his Administration and his plans for our country. Unfortunately for farmers, ranchers, and agricultural communities like ours in Central Washington, he had little to offer.
Instead of discussing real, concrete solutions that would help our farmers and ranchers through the recovery of a global pandemic, the President spent two hours pontificating on his radical agenda and social welfare programs.

Dan Newhouse (R-WA), Rodney Davis (R-IL), Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Ron Kind (D-WI), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), and Chellie Pingree (D-ME) introduced the Continuous Improvement and Accountability in Organic Standards Act (CIAO Act), bipartisan legislation to improve the federal process for the oversight of organic standards.

This bill will allocate funding for land-grant institutions to partner with local farmers to boost conservation and innovative climate practices. Farmers are already responsible stewards of the land, and this legislation empowers producers to voluntarily adopt practices that suit their individual needs while enabling the federal government to build on the successes already taking place in agricultural communities.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Billy Long (R-MO), and Mike Levin (D-CA) reintroduced the Agricultural Fairs Rescue Act, a bill to help preserve agricultural fairs across the country and offset the devastating financial losses they have experienced due to COVID-19. The Agricultural Fairs Rescue Act will provide grant funding for agricultural fairs through state departments of agriculture to keep them functioning and preserve them for the future.

In the first two and a half months of 2021, illegal immigration has reached a crisis point. There have been more than 200,000 illegal border crossings with as many as 5,000 illegal crossing encounters in one day. In order to maintain the rule of law and keep criminals out of our country, we must continue working to enhance our border security.
One way to do this is to take away opportunities to work illegally in the United States. Congress can do so by creating a viable agriculture labor program that allows workers to come into our country, work legally, and return home.
