Last week, Congress came together to pass, and President signed into law, bipartisan legislation that prioritizes securing our border and keeps the federal government open. The legislation may not have provided as much as I would have liked for President Trump's request, but in the end the legislation represented significant progress by providing tools our Border Patrol agents need to do their job.
In the American West, fewer issues are more complex or at times divisive as who gets access to our most vital single resource: water. Yet in Washington state, we can be proud that pragmatism, bipartisanship, and a strong commitment to a shared goal has allowed a major water project to progress with the input of a diverse group of local advocates.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after voting to approve the Conference Report to Accompany H.J. Res. 31 - Consolidated Appropriations Act to fund operations of the federal government and secure the border.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) participated in a Capitol Hill press conference with Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) and advocates including LIBRE, Americans for Prosperity, National Immigration Forum, FWD.US, and Dreamers to urge that Congress act on a bipartisan legislative solution for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that can get 218 votes in the House, 60 votes in the Senate, and the President's signature into law.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) and Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statements after the U.S. Senate approved a bipartisan lands package authored by Senator Cantwell and Senator Lisa Murkowsi (R-AK). The Senate-approved package includes legislation to authorize Phase III of the Yakima River Basin Integrated Water Resource Management Plan, an initiative to better accommodate the water needs of the agricultural community, conservationists, residents, and other stakeholders in the Yakima River Basin region.
Last week, Democrats heralded a "Green New Deal" framework promising "a massive transformation of our society" through "a 10-year plan to mobilize every aspect of American society at a scale not seen since World War Two to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions." The goal of being responsible stewards of our environment is certainly serious, but the details of this plan are not. Asked for her reaction, even Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed it as, "the green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is but they're for it, right?"
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Dan Newhouse (R-WA) announced that he has been appointed by House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to serve on the bipartisan Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress. The Select Committee was established at the start of the 116th Congress to hold hearings and study ways to improve and modernize the operation of Congress.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) and Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA) introduced H.R. 1048, the Yakima River Basin Water Enhancement Project Phase III Act. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statements after Democrats in the U.S. Senate blocked passage of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would require medical care for newborn infants who have survived attempted abortion. The legislation was introduced by Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE), who brought it to the Senate floor.
The issue of abortion is likely one of the biggest fault lines that divide Americans, but there is one aspect of this ongoing debate that is not controversial: According to a 2018 Gallup poll, only 28 percent of Americans believe that abortion should generally be legal in the second trimester. The poll found that only 13 percent of Americans believe that should be the case in the third trimester. Sadly, despite overwhelming national opposition, lawmakers' late-term abortion extremism is on the rise.
