In Central Washington, we are aware of the important role Hanford played in bringing an end to World War II and winning the Cold War. The federal government now has a legal and moral obligation to clean up the legacy of nuclear waste.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement after the Biden Administration's recent budget proposal to Congress for Fiscal Year 2022 eliminated Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding for communities surrounding the Hanford Site. Under President Biden's budget, other cleanup sites across the nation – except the Hanford Site in Central Washington and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina – would continue to receive Department of Energy (DOE) PILT funding.

RICHLAND, WA – Today, Rep. Newhouse joined Energy Northwest, Grant County Public Utility District (Grant PUD), and X-energy for the commencement of the TRi Energy Partnership. These organizations are partnering to evaluate, develop, and build a commercial Xe-100 advanced reactor at a previously licensed site north of Richland, Washington. Through the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, this will be the nation's first commercial advanced nuclear reactor.

Dan Newhouse (R-WA) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2018, which provides practical reforms to the nation's nuclear waste management policy to ensure the federal government fulfills its legal obligations to dispose of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste. This legislation passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 340 – 72.
